It is official, I was laid off this week... so I'm not sure if I am going to be able to continue Awesometown at this time on any sort of schedule. I am however still working on Local Look and would like to present yet another issue to you all.

Good news however, although I am in my 11th year of having a website, and my 8th year with gabeclogston.com, I just passed my 5 year mark of gabeclogston.com being up and running on it's current servers without a single day of downtime. I strongly recommend anyone looking for hosting to consider liquidweb, I think they are the best.

So, it is starting to look like I am in jeopardy of being laid off in the very near future, and because of that I have had to both start looking for another job and seriously consider that I might have to put Awesometown on another temporary hiatus. I really don't want for this to happen because I feel like I have just gotten into my stride again. One really awesome piece of news is that I am now drawing editorial cartoons for Highlands Today again, only this time in a freelance capacity.

I know this is late, I know. I have been a little busy lately with wedding planning and with some freelance graphic design I have been doing. I hope everyone understands.

This is the first of (at least) a two parter with a special guest I have been dying to include for a while now. I hope everyone enjoys it. It should be magical.

The poster in this comic is a real advertisement that James found a while back and gave to Chase to scan. We all had a good laugh, but it was really more of an optical illusion. I asked Chase if he had a copy of the original but he did not, he instead was nice enough to make me a diagram of what it looked like with two photos of elephants. It was almost and funny as the original, and I owe Chase a big thanks for the laugh. James however found a copy of the original scan which I present to you here.

So I actually rushed this comic through production so it is not quite as polished as I would like, but to be fair I am probably the only person who would notice some of the little things I skimped on. I am leaving for California on Thursday to go to a friends wedding (technically a friend of Karen's, but I'll claim them as my own), and for a mini vacation... which I really need. I will get to go to Disneyland for the first time, and eat at In & Out (which I hear will change my life). I am super excited... MR. TOAD HERE I COME!

There is a new face in this weeks comic, it is my friend Luis, who hopefully will get a more proper introduction in the near future. I will also try to get a bio written for him soon. Hope everyone enjoys it.

Well, it wasn't too difficult to crank out another comic in a week, but I don't think this is a pace I will enjoy for the long haul. Essentially it takes a little over 3 full days of work to finish a comic while I do my job, if I miss a day or if work is exceptionally busy for any reason than I will not have it done in time, so it is very likely from this day forward comics will be coming every other week. This comic brings us up to somewhat present day. Karen and I are engaged and are preparing for our wedding... as of my current plans I probably won't feature my wedding in the comic... that is unless I get a really good idea between now and then. I don't want this to become a comic that focuses on relationships too much, but I did however want to clarify how important Karen's character is to Gabe and to the comic from this point forward.

For anyone who would like to know, this is not really how I asked Karen to marry me.

It has been a while hasn't it? The big day is finally here, I have posted a new comic, the first in a little over two years. What happened? I guess I got distracted by what I thought was going to be a career in editorial cartoons, but when the newspaper industry fell apart I was left (like most other editorial cartoonists) wondering what was going to be next. I've been wanting to get back into drawing a comic, but I feared I wouldn't be able to make the time. Recently I've convinced myself it could be done and, I just had to try... and I was right. In the end it was alot harder going back than I thought it would be... but it was worth it. I'm hoping to get on a pace where I can start producing comics on a weekly basis again, but since I am working mainly from my place of work that may not be entirely possible. More than likely I would expect a comic every other week at this point, but I'm going to do my best to see how quickly I can get another one done. I have gone back in time in a way and I am making the comic on with Adobe Illustrator 10, Photoshop 7, both of which are older programs than what I was using when I started Shrimp Chips years ago. But they don't bog down my computer, or take up too much hard drive space, which is nice.

I'm happy to finally introduce my fiancée to the comic, we were early into our relationship when I made my last comic and the script for this comic has been kicking around since then. I hope I captured her adequately.

Cut To The Chase!

I would just like to say... wow... it took a really long time to get this comic done. I admit I sort of put Awesometown to the back of my brain because I have been so busy this last year, but just as I had intended, when things slowed down I started to work on it again and I was psyched to be working on it. That's when it happened. I got super busy again, and it took forever. I'm hoping that with one behind me the next one won't be as hard... and I'd like to get more than 4 done a year, which seems to be my current pace. It is further frustrating that two of my friends now have webcomics which are pumping out new comics at lightning speed... nothing against them or their comics... but damn it is annoying. I take pride in the fact that my comic has very clean, well done art, and decent dialog that can at times be both witty and funny. However it is because of these things that it sometimes takes so long to get these strips out, because each one is crafted with love... well maybe not, but not far from it.

This strip welcomes in Chase, who is one of those damn friends with a new webcomic. It is quick, quirky, and sometimes gross, but it is funny and I think everyone needs to go check it out.

Also, there should be some new features added to the site pretty soon, so be on the lookout.

Olde Time Hockey!

I know, I know, I know. I'm sorry, I really am. Let me explain. This comic is the first appearance of Joe Martin who is one of my best friends. Joe is one of those people that I have wanted to put into my comic for a long time (I have even gone so far as to squeeze him into most of the backgrounds and splash pages for the old Shrimp Chips comics). However... there has been alot going on lately and to be honest there were some days where I was pretty irritated with Joe, not always because of anything he did wrong... but my inability to focus caused me to stop production of this comic about half way and once I stopped I had a hard time getting it going again. I haven't ever told Joe this, and I hope he doesn't read this and get mad or feel bad, it's not his fault.

Now that I have put Joe out there... let me explain why it is not his fault. You see, I could have skipped this comic at any point and just moved on... but I didn't, and there are other more complicated reasons for that. Essentially we will just say that I was not in the "headspace" to write a new comic for the last few months, and since I couldn't write a new comic, skipping this comic was not an option. I hope everyone understands that it is for the best that I don't write comics while I am depressed, irritated, or feeling rejected... and it is for the best that I waited until I got my "headspace" clear.

My life has changed quite a bit recently, and I am really happy about it. I met the girl of my dreams, and after some time she and I seem to be on the same page. Anyone hoping for me to get on track with weekly comics probably just started crying... yes, another distraction... but you know what, this is one distraction I wouldn't trade for anything. Even if that means that you have to wait for comics... sorry, thems the breaks.

Give A Little Whistle!

I have a little momentum now it seems, as this is the second comic in 5 days, however I don't think that pace will last, I really don't want to burn myself out anytime soon so I think it will be over a week before we see another new episode. I haven't decided yet if I am going to create a schedule for new comics, Shrimp Chips published every Friday without missing a beat for quite a long streak. I don't really have goals like that this time around. I know schedules make comics more "reader friendly" but I don't know, I guess I'll wait and see if people ask for a schedule.

This episode is a little random, and I think that is why I like it. It sort of echos the "Bananas The Monkey" storylines, in that it shows that Gabe is just a big kid and his mind wanders and creates things to entertain him. Thanks to Joe Martin (Discount Hero Team) for the idea that springboarded this strip. I'm not really sure where the storyline would have went without it. Catch Up Time!

Well, it has been a little while. Thank you to anyone who stumbled upon this, the fact that people still check back, hoping I do something, baffles me. But I guess it paid off... I did something. Awesometown is my new comic, the site is still in a state of emergency, but I only get so must time off of work to build it so it may take a little time. I hope everyone likes where the new strip is going, and I'm sure old fans will miss characters like TK, Hanken, and FJ, as will I. However, as they have all moved on, the strip should do the same. New friends are around the corner, and old friends may stop by now and again. You never know what will happen next in Awesometown, and maybe it's better that way. This strip is taken pretty much straight out of real life. I hope no offence is taken at my use of the "Hanken story" as a punchline, but to be honest... it sort of wrote itself. Sarcastic and cynical, Gabe can be foolish, sometimes even naive, but he is not stupid. It is easy to describe Gabe as childlike. He does not know his own strength, and this fact combined with his sometimes short temper is usually a recipe for trouble. Gabe is known to conversationally swear, and at times can be extremely offensive, he does not mean to be... he just doesn't know any better. Gabe is an avid Red Sox and Bruins fan and is known to casually wear shirts and hats for both teams often. Gabe is a dedicated fan of Comic Books and Star Wars, and likes to reference them as often as possible. Lando Calrissian is a character in the fictional Star Wars universe. He was a former smuggler and friend of Han Solo, who has a fondness for Colt 45 brand malt liquor and the ladies... and is now somehow Gabe's Conscience. Presumably after losing the Millennium Falcon to Han in a game of sabacc and later winning the job of Baron Administrator of the floating Cloud City on the planet of Bespin, Gabe's imagination ran wild and chose Lando to be his conscience.

1st Appearance: Awesometown #3 - Olde Time Hockey!

Joe is a longtime friend of Gabe's who may or may not be Russian... actually he most likely isn't Russian, but he does sort of look Russian... and he does like Hockey, he does not however wear a fuzzy hat. Joe is obsessed with 80's pop culture, and Star Wars, which provides for quite a bit of banter between him and Gabe. Joe is a huge fan of Pink Floyd and Journey, he would also pay up to $200 to see Faith No More in concert... even though this is very unlikely. He doesn't like eggs or things made with eggs, even though he is not fully aware of all the foods he does like which have eggs in them... like cake. Joe may not be trustworthy around office supply cabinets of paper.

Chase is the mellow yet excitable emo kid, who just happens to be Awesometowns biggest fan... oddly enough. Chase is quite a bit younger than Gabe and is usually harassed because of this fact, or because he has never heard of any of the music or movies which Gabe is talking about. Like Gabe, Chase has a webcomic, which although Gabe says it's bullshit is quite popular online.

Karen is the smart, beautiful and funny girl of Gabe's dreams. And although she plays hard to get from time to time, she is just as much in love with Gabe as he is with her. Karen enjoys girly things like Jane Austen books, poetry, and beanie babies, but she also can name the entire starting lineup of the Boston Red Sox and knows enough about the English monarchy from 1509-1603 to write a book of her own... even though she thinks King Henry was a douche bag.

I swear some people don't know you can type more than one sentence at a time in Instant Messenger programs. This really bugs me, I hate getting messages that should be one message, but are broken up into 20 tiny 2 word messages. I guess I can understand after conversation has been initiated that maybe you would make some quick statements. But some people can't type hello without breaking it into 5 messages. When typing the first message you have all the time in the world, the person on the other end doesn't know your typing to them so they aren't sitting there wondering whats taking you so long, type everything you have to type to get the person on the other end to want to talk to you. The only time constraint you have is that you want to get the message to them before they log off, but thats like flying blind anyways. I got messaged today from someone I didn't know and I just sort of snapped...

With a trip planned this weekend I was thinking maybe it would be a good idea to finally sit down and write the rules to calling shotgun during a car ride... then I thought "I bet some loser out there has already done it"... I was right. So here it is... a link to the official rules of Shotgun.

So, with that idea ruined I started thinking about what else I promised I would some day document somewhere on my site but hadn't gotten around to it... then I remembered Punch Buggy... but then I thought yet again "I bet some loser out there has already done it"... and once again I was right. So here are the official rules of Punch Buggy.

With both these dreams shattered I thought maybe I could redeem myself with a lesser known game... like... um... Slap Bob! Yeah, um... the rules are pretty straight forward. Whenever you meet someone named Bob, give them a good firm slap right across the face. An excellent way to break that uncomfortable silence when you first meet someone.
